Saison de porcs (2009), Gary Victor’s new novel, has just been published by Canadian publishers Mémoire d’encrier. After the great success of Treize nouvelles vaudou (2007) [13 Voodoo Stories], he returns with this “colorful work and his habitual dose of humor, causticity, and sarcasm.”
Set in a hot Port-au-Prince summer, the plot revolves around the adventures of inspector Dieuswalwe Azémar as he battles his own demons of alcohol consumption and the shady intersections of adoption, corruption, and religion. Saison de porcs has been called a mix of fable and detective story set “under the rainbows of magic realism.” The publishers describe the novel as “a plunge into the mad and tragic world of magic, superstition, and Haitian ‘street politics’ [politicaillerie].”
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Gary Victor is a novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. His works have been published in Haiti, Canada, and France. He has received numerous awards including, more recently, the Prix du Livre Insulaire à Ouessant (2003) and the Prix RFO du Livre (2004). Other works he has published with Mémoire d’encrier are Chroniques d’un leader haïtien comme il faut: Les meilleures d’Albert Buron (2006) and Treize nouvelles vaudou (2007).
