The Power of Red

I love red lips and red nails. So chic. So Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. Non? Unfortunately, when I have red nails and red lips around Christmas time, I feel completely, utterly, totally lame. Same for Valentine’s Day. Why is RED such a holiday colour? Think about it…even Remembrance Day – red poppies (for the Canadians out there) Even the Canadian flag! RED. No red nails around Christmas time, Valentine’s Day, Remembrance Day, or even Canada Day. Minus all those red dicatated holidays, I love my red nails and red lips, for the rest of the year. Russian Red from Mac is the lip colour of choice, whereas for the nails, I’ll do Big Red Apple from OPI.

I love this woman… :)

Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie

  The heart shaped lake is Lake St. Clair and is not considered one of the Great Lakes although it is part of the Great Lakes water system.  It is connected to Lake Erie and the marshes in this area make it a very productive part of the Great Lakes–a nursery for fish, birds and insects.  Lake Erie is the shallowest of the five Great Lakes and it is a warm water fishery.  Read more about the Great Lakes system in my book, The Dynamic Great Lakes.

Chinese New Year parade negotiates Olympic roadblocks

Organizers of Vancouver’s Chinese New Year Parade say they are reorganizing the upcoming event to get around some roadblocks on the opening weekend of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

In years past up to 60,000 people have descended on Chinatown for the colourful event, but next year’s 36th annual parade is scheduled for Feb.14, 2010 — the second day of competition for the Games.

And that means the organizers are dealing with a many new issues, because two of the main Olympic venues — BC Place and GM Place — and one of the Olympic transportation routes are just a few blocks away.

Muriel Honey, the manager of films and special events for the City of Vancouver, said negotiations are underway to ensure the parade goes ahead, but it is no simple task.

“This is an unusual event because there are six different organizations who are equal partners in putting it on and those are six different voices with layers of bureaucracy that you deal with, and there are cultural issues of course,” said Honey.

The city has said the parade can go ahead but it must be over by 11 a.m. PT, an hour before the traditional start time. That means parade organizers need volunteers and spectators to arrive as early as 9 a.m. PT.

Organizers have also shortened the route by two blocks to fit the tighter timeline and won’t be able to close all of Pender Street to traffic, because nearby Hastings Street is an official Olympic route, which must be kept open.

Because of the Olympics, parking in the area will also be extremely limited, along with police officers who are required to manage traffic for the parade.

But the organizers say there is an upside to holding the parade during the Games. They hope the convergence of the two events will be a great chance to show off an important part of Vancouver.

They also say it is fortunate there will be no Olympic hockey games that day at nearby GM Place, and they hope to draw thousands of Olympic visitors looking for something to do on Sunday morning.

Apples and Oranges

In my post on Monday, I wondered at this data point from Forrester’s Social Technographics research for Canada:

The study also found that 79% of Canadians take part in social media at least once a month, whether they’re checking Facebook, uploading a video to YouTube or posting ratings and comments on a blog.

My wondering:

Actually I’m not sure how meaningful it is to say that almost 80% “take part in social media,” since these days, anyone online is reading blog content — whether they realize it or not — and practically everyone online watches video from YouTube. But anyhow.

And cleaning up my email today, I was reminded of that recent Ipsos study which found that 82% of Canadians have Internet access at home. (I’d also forgotten that I had blogged about it here.)

Apples and oranges maybe, but I can’t help but be struck by the fact that 8 in 10 Canadians have some form of regular internet access and also participate in social media.

Guelph Minor Hockey Night - Dec. 19th

The Guelph Hurricanes announce that Saturday December 19th, will be ”Guelph Minor Hockey Night.”

Kids wearing their GMHA Hockey Jerseys will receive Free Admission

That night the Guelph Hurricanes host the Welland Canadians at 7:30 pm at the Sleeman Centre.

On this night all Guelph Minor Hockey Association players wearing their teams hockey jerseys will receive FREE admission to the game.

So come out and show us your team colours, cheer on the Hurricanes as you enjoy an exciting junior hockey game.
